Here are sobering facts about this disease in the USA:

  • MA and CT are 2 of the top 5 states for incidence of breast cancer; NY follows closely behind, in the top 15
  • 24,630 cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in these three states in 2011
  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes
  • Over 85% of women who get breast cancer have no family history of the disease

About the William Raveis Breast Cancer Research Fund

Funding has supported the William Raveis-ACS Patient Navigator Program at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, CT and the Patient Navigator Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, MA.  These two Patient Navigator programs combined assisted more than 1,000 patients in 2010 and close to 1,300 cancer patients and their families are expected to be helped this year.

Through the assistance of these programs, patients navigate through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.  They move from consultations with medical professionals to decisions about treatment to concerns about finances and how to care for loved ones.  The Patient Navigators work with the patients and partner with hospital staff to make sure newly diagnosed cancer patients, their families and caregivers receive the support they need.

Another vital program for cancer patients is The Hope Lodge in Boston, which offers lodging for patients and their companions free of charge while the patient is undergoing cancer treatment. Since it's opening in 2008, the Hope Lodge in Boston has provided over 45,000 nights of free lodging to 1,450 cancer patients from 46 states and 12 countries, saving them more than $8.2 million in housing costs. These services are invaluable to those who are traveling to Boston for treatment and may already be feeling the financial medical burden.

*Your monetary gift is tax deductible to the full extent of the IRS guidelines.
