Duane Shields defended his title as he raced to victory at this weekend’s NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Power in the Park race at Virginia Motorsports Park. He was the number one qualifier going into eliminations and then captured the win at this race for the second year in a row. On his way to the final, the Boulder City, Nev., resident scored wins against Richard St. Pierre and Dan Mercier, before being paired against Rich McPhillips in the final round. Joining Duane Shield as a back-to-back victor was Steve Furr, who earned the Wally trophy in Top Dragster presented by Select Performance. The Harrisburg, N.C., racer doubled-up on the weekend by also reaching the winner’s circle in Super Gas. He raced Anthony Bertozzi and Tom Stalba in the finals of each racing class. Maryland racer DJ Cox Jr. took home the trophy with after making a 5.579 second, 260.51 mph pass in Top Alcohol Funny Car final. His run was enough to hold off Phil Burkart, Yorkville, N.Y., who posted a 6.904 second, 227.38 mph run in the championship round. Cox defeated John Headley of Newportville, Pa., in round one and Dan Pomponio, Berlin, N.J. in the semis. Also scoring event wins this weekend were Doug Doll, Lancaster, Pa., over Al Ackerman in Comp; Mark Alvey,Chesterfield, Va., defeating Bucky Hess in Super Stock; Mike Robilotto, Albany, N.Y., taking out Jason Kenny in Super Comp; and Robbie Welch, Mechanicsville, Md., ending Thomas Rakowski’s day in Super Street. In the Top Sportsman presented by Select Performance racing class, it was Mark Payne, Waynesboro, Va., took home the Wally by beating Ray Bamond, Paterson, N.J., with a 6.775 second at 201.58 mph run. In Pro Stock Snowmobile, Gary Schweikert, Slatington, Pa., put his ’15 Skidoo in the winner’s circle after beating Ed Armstrong, Westfield, Mass, in the final round. Also in action this weekend was the NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series with defending event winner John Price, Emmitsburg, Md., leading the charge in Pro Gas, as he knocked out Keith Browne for the win. Charley Douglass, Staunton, Va., defended his title by winning in the Street Pro category as was unopposed in the final round. Running a ’92 Sportster in Pro Fuel Harley, Dennis Fisher of Dayton, Ohio, recorded a 7.391 second lap at 161.94 mph and scored the win. Hot Street Harley winner Troy Young, Wietz, Va., took out Charley Douglass, with a winning pass of 9.745 seconds at 137.46 mph. The Screamin’ Eagle Performance trophy went to Nate Carnahan, Powhatan, Va., with his ’90 HD. Carnahan clocked in at 10.436 seconds, 115.42. Northeast Division racers head to Maple Grove Raceway for their next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, May 27-29.
