Sunday

EPPING, N.H. – In the final results from New England Dragway and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Duane Shields, Boulder City, Nev., and Dan Pomponio, Berlin, N.J., took home the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car respectively.

Shields worked his way through the field and ran 5.348 seconds at 272.34 mph in his final-round victory over Rich McPhillips, Phoenixville, Pa., who clocked in at 16.857 seconds, 44.93 mph. Shields had the advantage off the starting line against McPhillips but McPhillips had problems early in the run and smoked the tires. With this win, Shields wins his 28th Lucas Oil Regional race and this is his fourth Wally trophy this year.

Pomponio faced off against Matt Gill, Brockton, Mass., and posted a winning run of 5.695 seconds, 254.33 mph in his 2010 Monte Carlo. Gill drove to a 5.664 second, 253.52 mph lap for his runner up finish. Pomponio had a great reaction time off the line of 0.006 seconds and was able to hold on to the lead and take the hole shot win over Gill and received his sixth Lucas Oil Regional event win.

In Super Gas, Mike Sawyer, Leominster, Mass., faced off against his father Ray Sawyer, Acton, Mass., in the final round. Mike had the starting line advantage and posted a winning run of 9.901 seconds at 162.49 mph. Ray posted a runner-up finish of 9.880 seconds, 174.12 mph. With this win over his father, Mike wins his 15th Lucas Oil Divisional race and wins this race for the second year in a row.

A racer winning his first Lucas Oil Divisional Wally this weekend was Peter Luciano, Malvern, Pa., Luciano faced off against Joseph Santangelo, Marlborough, Conn., and had a winning run of 8.663 seconds, 154.67 mph. Santangelo had a runner-up finish of 7.829 seconds, 169.40 mph.

In Stock, Anthony Fetch, Colonia, N.J., met Allison Smyth, Uxbridge, Mass., in the final and took the win. Fetch had a perfect light and ran 11.375 seconds, 109.25 mph to get the win over Smyth. This was Fetch’s ninth Lucas Oil Divisional win and his seventh in Stock.

Derek Mota, Peabody, Mass., took on Jason Kenny, Kutztown, Pa., in the final for Super Comp. Kenny had the starting line advantage but took too much stripe in a double breakout. Mota had a winning run of 8.895 seconds, 171.53 mph to receive his first ever Lucas Oil Divisional race.

In the MXI/Magnaflux Top Dragster presented by Select Performance, Joe DiPasquale faced off against Albert Staffieri. DiPasquale had the starting line advantage off the line and took the win with a run of 6.923 seconds, 195.51 mph. This was DiPasquale’s fourth Lucas Oil Divisional race win and his third in Top Dragster.

The MXI/Magnaflux Top Sportsman presented by Select Performance also competed at the event and Frederick Perkins, Plainville, Conn., drove his ’57 Belair to the finish line to beat Ray Bamond, Paterson, N.J. Bamond was took quick on the tree and turns on the red light. Perkins run of 6.861 seconds, 202.79 mph gets him the win and his third Lucas Oil Divisional Wally.

Other racers visiting the winner’s circle this weekend were Jeff Roell, Poughquag, N.Y., in Super Stock; John Olson, Lynbrook, in Super Street and Frank Berard Jr., Troy, N.Y., in Pro Stock Snowmobile.

Northeast Division racers head to Atco Dragway for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, July 31 – August 2.

Friday

EPPING, N.H. – Racing kicked off today for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Night of Fire at New England Dragway the fourth of seven events in the NHRA Northeast Division where drivers earn points leading to national, regional and divisional championships

The 270-mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car classes highlight the event making a pair of qualifying runs today which set their fields for Saturday’s Night of Fire featuring 3 rounds of eliminations for the alcohol classes.

The division’s MXI/Magnaflux/Select Performance Top Dragster and Top Sportsman classes also made a pair of runs today and will make a final qualifying pass on Saturday at 3 p.m. followed by rounds 1 and 2 of eliminations beginning at 6 p.m.  Super Stock, Super Gas and the rest of the classes in competition ran qualifying and time trials today, which will continue tomorrow, followed by early rounds of eliminations and final eliminations on Sunday. 

Gates open at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday with final qualifying and time trials set to begin at 9 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars will run elimination rounds at 5, 7, and 9 p.m. followed by their winner’s circle celebration.  

Sunday kicks off at 9 a.m. with round three for Top Dragster and Top Sportsman set for 10:30 a.m. with Comp Eliminator going off at 11 a.m.  Admission for the event is $30 on Saturday and $10 on Sunday for adults, children 7-11 are $5 per day and kids 6 and under are free with a paid adult.   For more information call New England Dragway (603) 679-8001 or visit www.newenglanddragway.com.

EPPING, N.H. - New England Dragway host the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Night of Fire on July 17-19. The event is one of seven in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northeast division and one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional, regional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The division’s MXI/Magnaflux Top Sportsman and Top Dragster Series’ presented by Select Performance and the Pro Stock Snowmobile will also run in conjunction with the event.

Qualifying and time trials start at 9 a.m. Friday and continue Saturday at 9 a.m. Top Dragster and Top Sportsman qualify Friday at noon and 4:30 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. with eliminations on Saturday at 6 and 8 p.m. Comp Eliminator qualify Friday at 2 and 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 10:30 p.m. with eliminations at 12:30 and 6:45 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualify on Friday at 1 and 6 p.m. then run all three rounds of eliminations on Saturday for the Night of Fire presented by AAA of Northern New England and New England Ford Dealers.  Eliminations continue Sunday at 9 a.m. Top Dragster and Top Sportsman continue eliminations at 10:30 a.m.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at New England Dragway are $10 Friday, $30 Saturday and $10 Sunday. Children 7 to 11 years old are $5 each day. Children 6 and under are admitted free with paid adult.

NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES: Fact Sheet

WHAT: NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Night of Fire, one of seven events in Northeast Division competition where drivers earn points leading to divisional, regional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division’s MXI/Magnaflux Top Dragster and Top Sportsman Series’ presented by Select Performance will run in conjunction with the event as well as Pro Stock Snowmobile.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND
: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2015 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions. Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA’s seven divisions will compete for a share of the $124,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2016 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series’ eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2016 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning regional and division teams will share $25,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a “double up” bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2016 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.
