Saturday

PETERSBURG, Va. – Duane Shields and Todd Veney raced to victory at this weekend’s NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Power in the Park at Virginia Motorsports Park. The pair was joined by home state racers Sterling Simmons and Erin Arledge in the winner’s circle celebration.

Shields, Boulder City, Nev., ran the quickest pass of the day to defeat Rich McPhillips, Phoenixville, Pa., in the Top Alcohol Dragster final posting a 5.370 elapsed time at 271.30 mph to McPhillips’ 5.537, 268.12 mph lap.  The win is Shields’ 26th regional event win and his second this year.  Shields took out Jake Allen and Wayne Morris on his way to the final.

Indianapolis runner Veney scored his ninth regional win driving his ’14 Camaro.  His 5.586, 263.10 pass in Top Alcohol Funny Car was enough to hold off Marie Ferriolo, Allentown, N.J., with a 5.711, 253.18.  Veney defeated Melinda Green-King of Norfolk, Va., in round one and Matt Gill, Brocktown, Mass., in round 2.

Simmons, Chesterfield, Va., and Arledge, Chesapeake, Va., took home the trophies in Stock and Magnaflux Top Sportsman presented by Select Performance.  Both were fist time winners as Simmons upended Steve Carter, Ashland, Va., and Arledge went 7.459 seconds at 183.69 mph to take out Edward Foley, Warminster, Pa.

Also scoring their first divisional events wins this weekend were Pete Luciano, Malvern, Pa., over Thomas Miller in Comp; Norm Hall, Waldorf, Md., defeating Joel Warren in Super Stock; George Caheely, LaFayette, Ga., taking out Shannon Justice in Super Comp; and Calvin Starcher, LaPlata, Md., ending Dale Koncen’s day in Super Street.

In the Magnaflux Top Dragster class it was Steve Furr, Harrisburg, N.C., grabbing his 12th NHRA Wally trophy crossing the finish line in 6.947 seconds at 182.23 mph beating Luc Angers, Laval, Quebec, and John Labbous Jr. won his second out of White House, Tenn., ousting Kevin Maupin, Stuarts Draft, Va., in Super Gas.

In Pro Stock Snowmobile, Frank Berard Jr., Troy, N.Y., put his ’03 Skidoo in the winner’s circle with a lap of 8.398, 154.55 over Brian Pretzel, Belding, Mich., 8.307, 154.88.

Also in action this weekend was the NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series with John Price, Emmitsburg, Md., leading the charge in Pro Gas knocking out William Rowe Jr. for the win on his ’09 Buell in 8.845 seconds at 148.71 mph.

Charley Douglass, Staunton, Va., won both the Hot Street and Street Pro categories.  Running a ’92 Sportster in both classes, Douglas recorded a 9.637 second lap in Hot Street followed by an 8.911 in Street Pro.

The Screamin’ Eagle Performance trophy went to William Rowe, Jr. of Hellertown, Pa., with his ’06 VRod.  Rowe clocked in at 10.239 seconds, 125.72 to the quicker Gary Douglas and his 9.972, 114.84 on a ’01 Sportster

Event resumption

PETERSBURG, Va. - NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northeast division returns to Virginia Motorsports Park for Power in the Park this weekend, May 8-9. The event, postponed due to weather last month, is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional, regional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The division’s MXI/Magnaflux Top Dragster and Top Sportsman Series’ presented by Select Performance will run in conjunction with the event.

VMP will host a test and tune event on Friday, from noon to 6 p.m.  Racing action gets underway on Saturday with a time trial session for all classes beginning at 8 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car will run at 10:30 a.m.  Eliminations will begin immediately following the time trials.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car classes will run eliminations rounds at 12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.  Saturday’s action will conclude with a winner’s circle celebration.

Due to unfavorable weather, the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Power in the Park event at Virginia Motorsports Park was postponed and will be completed on May 9, 2015. Please check the http://www.nhradiv1.com/ for more information.

The fields are now set heading into eliminations with Richard Bourke, Old Tappan, N.J., and Mickey Ferro, Stamford, Conn., leading the way in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, respectively. Bourke laid down a 5.275-second, 270.59-mph pass to put him at the top with Ferro running a 5.522 second, 262.18 mph lap in his ’11 Monte Carlo.

This event is one of seven in the division and one of 45 that take place throughout the year from coast to coast with over 400 of the best racers from the region looking for valuable points leading toward national, regional and divisional championships. 


Friday

PETERSBURG, Va. -- The NHRA Northeast Division is at Virginia Motorsports Park for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Power in the Park this weekend featuring 260 mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars along with Pro Fuel Harleys and the NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series.

This weekend’s event is one of seven in the division and one of 45 that take place throughout the year from coast to coast with over 400 of the best racers from the region looking for valuable points leading toward national, regional and divisional championships. 

Racers made qualifying and time trial runs today that also included the division’s MXI/Magnaflux Top Sportsman and Top Dragster which made a pair of qualifying passes and will have a final qualifying runs on Saturday followed by eliminations.  The Top Alcohol teams also made a pair of qualifying passes today and will run elimination rounds on Saturday at 3, 5 and 7 p.m. 

Pro Fuel Harley and the rest of the motorcycle classes set their fields today with eliminations set to begin at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Pro Stock Snowmobile is also in action this weekend with time trials today and Saturday morning which will set their field for eliminations beginning Saturday at 2:45pm.

BONUS  PROGRAMS:

NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2015 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions. Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA’s seven divisions will compete for a share of the $124,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2015 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA’s Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series’ eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2015 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning regional and division teams will share $25,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a “double up” bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2015 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

NHRA HARLEY-DAVIDSON DRAG RACING SERIES: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, classes include Pro Fuel, Pro Gas, Draggin’ Bagger, Street Pro, Hot Street, and Screamin’Eagle Harley. The series posts an event purse of nearly $10,000 with a total series purse of more than $200,000.
