Sunday

EPPING, N.H. – The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series headed to New England Dragway over the weekend for the Night of Fire event and Jackie Fricke, Flemington, N.J., and Mickey Ferro, Stamford, Conn., took home the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car respectively.

Fricke, worked her way through the field and ran 5.701 seconds at 269.51 mph in her final round victory over Rich McPhillips, Phoenixville, Pa, who clocked in at 5.773 seconds, 263.77 mph. McPhillips was off the starting line first and was out in front until about 660 feet when his car pulled the front tires in the air and had to lift off the throttle. Fricke had shook at the start and pedaled it once but she was able to recover and get the car back on track and down the groove to take the win. This win marked Fricke’s second regional win in a row. She received her first Wally last month at Lebanon Valley.

Ferro faced off against Matt Gill, Bridgewater, Mass., and posted a winning run of 5.599 seconds, 248.39 mph in his ’08 Monte Carlo. Gill drove to a 5.816 second, 249.67 mph lap for his runner up finish. Ferro was off the starting line first and extended his lead as the two cars made it down the quarter mile. As Ferro’s car made it down the track there were some sparks and sounded as if he lost the engine as it crossed the finish line, but that didn’t matter as he got the win and took home the Top Alcohol Funny Car Wally this weekend.

Mike Sawyer, Leominster, Mass., visited the winners circle twice this weekend with his wins in Super Street and Super Gas. Sawyer posted a breakout winning run of 10.914 seconds, 137.69 mph, in his Super Street win over Frank Quarno, Jr. who posted a runner-up finish of 10.880 seconds, 132.86 mph. In the Super Gas final, Sawyer faced off against Tom Stalba, Williamstown, N.J. Sawyer had a final round pass 9.910 seconds, 159.85 mph, against Stalba’s 9.918 second, 162.06 mph run. Stalba was quicker at the starting line but Sawyer ran better on the track to take his second win of the weekend.

Other racers visiting the winner’s circle this weekend were Frank Aragona, Freehold, N.J., in Comp Eliminator; Donald Pires, Somerset, Mass., in Stock Eliminator; Donald Belles, Collegeville, Pa., in Super Stock; and Jason Kenny, Kutztown, Pa., in Super Comp. In the MXI/Magnaflux Top Sportsman class it was Fred Clark, East Bridgewater, Ma., taking the win while Kenneth Moses, Colonia, N.J., won in the MXI/Magnaflux Top Dragster Series.
